A lota is a unique shaped bowl/jug with rounded edges that is common sight in most traditional
Indian homes and especially used for most Hindu rituals. This has been passed down from one
generation to another with every passing one realizing the benefits of this unique container.
A lota is made from various metals but the most common one is copper. At the altar the
copper lota is used to store water or milk offered to the deity/gods/ goddesses. It is believed
that the metal that the lota is made from infuses the liquid contained with added vigour. It is
not uncommon to see these filled with grain or other offerings like ghee (purified butter) or
even flowers at any Indian Hindu ritual.
The benefits of a copper lota don’t end here. In the traditional Indian kitchen, the copper
lota lota is used to preserve or hold liquids like butter milk, milk or water. In many homes
the copper lota makes a stately appearance at the meal times at the dining table to hold
water – adding a dash of grandness to the meal. It is also often seen at spas offering ayurveda
treatments.
The powerful combination of having water from a copper lota is difficult to miss. It is often
used to hold and preserve mixtures for added strength. In times of illness, women of the home
keep water in the copper lota overnight, to be consumed the next morning.
